Pics of Miracle Camp BMA (Ao-Wa-Kiya)

Okay, here are a few pics from the trip down memory lane the other day. The cottage is where we used to sleep. The swing is still on the lake front. And the house pic is the stone house where we had to say our memory verses on the front porch.

Oh my goodness. Miracle Camp (or Camp-Tick-in-the-Woods as my dad called it) in Shelby, MI. I spent the summers from 1979 to 1985 there. Good times! I'll never forget that glider swing...

had forgotten all about getting to camp and having to go down to the lodge to say my verses. I always seemed to have Susan Plate to listen to my verses. I think I still have my ABC's book fromwhen I was younger. I actually painted the shuffleboard surfaces one weekend as a whitefoot with Gordon Ooms. That was the same weekend I remember getting a "hole-in-one" at frisbee golf. I'll also never forget the whitefoot parties and raiding the canteen late on weekends. I still went to the Labor Day retreats up until a few years ago. Less and less familiar facies every year. Whatever happens to all those "old" whitefoot pictures Mr. O'dell always took?

I have been doing an internet search for BMA camps in either WI or MI because I went to one as a child either place and can't remember where. So, this was so fun to come across! I still don't know if this is the one where I was. Did they have riding horses there? The funny coincidence is that I am from Nashville, too!

Eloise, I believe they had horses when I was there. I don't remember riding them myself but it seems like they had them. I will be back to the new camp ministry Ao-wa-ki-ya next month for a Mens Retreat.

Glad I came across your site; I was trying to remember where this camp was, but most searches lead to the FEC camp in Lawton, MI.

I was pretty young when I attended Miracle Camp, but I remember playing shuffle board. We also ate "BMA-style" oatmeal growing up (i.e., cinnamon, sugar, and raisins cooked in with the oatmeal).

My grandfather worked for BMA in St. Louis, but, sadly, the internet barely acknowledges the existence of this former ministry.

I grew up in Holland, and today I was thinking about the many times at miracle camp with the whole family. My parents took us all the time. Wow..... I still drive through once in a while to get that blast from the past, and occasionally talk to one of the new people, and try to explain the mystical place it used to be. They must think I'm nuts. Imagene Houston was my teacher for a little while, and she has written a book, available online, all about the history of this camp. Don Odell, told me he loved me on the trail from the dining hall to the chapel, I'll never forget that moment in time. Anyways, anybody who remembers the Dick family, get in touch. That means you Darla birdsong, Kristy green, Jennifer smith. Travis Dick. 616-848-9814
